What is Babywearing?
Babywearing is carrying your baby close to your body in a pouch, sling, wrap, or other baby carrier. Carrying your baby is not a new fad. It is a time tested way of nurturing your baby and young child while still being able to accomplish everyday tasks. The most current research has proven what people have known for centuries. Carrying your babies is good for them!
Why should I wear my baby?
Wouldn’t you like to free your arms and hands for other tasks? How about be able to use the bathroom, fix a quick meal, look after other children, or nurse without feeling tied to the sofa or easy chair? Looking for a way for other caregivers to bond with the baby? Baby carriers are also a way to make shopping and running other errands easier and quicker. There are so many reasons, and you will certainly find some that you hadn’t even thought of before.
What are the benefits?
There are a few articles about the benefits of babywearing. Check them out at the link in the side menu.
Do I have to wear my baby all the time?
No. In fact many people who use baby carriers own and use their strollers too. Babywearing is not necessarily about having your baby in a carrier all the time, but finding out when it is helpful to your baby and you. Once you start, you may find you have more opportunities to use your baby carrier than you thought!
Why a Babywearing Group?
The majority of support currently available is online or in printed materials. While some people do perfectly fine with this, most of us wished at some point that we could talk to someone who could answer our questions. Even stores that sell baby carriers do not usually have a babywearing expert on hand to help you learn how to use your new carrier properly. As a result, I have seen quite a few parents using baby carriers incorrectly and unsafely. In person support is important as it can be beneficial to people who may have trouble with a carrier or position. Having someone who can see you put the carrier on and give helpful hints can sometimes make a big difference in the comfort of babywearing. Also, since babywearing is a relatively uncommon practice in our society, it provides a place to look to for support and reliable information.
How can this group help me?
Come to a meeting to learn about the many benefits of babywearing for babies and parents. You can receive assistance in selecting a baby carrier to best meet your and your child’s needs. There are a variety of carriers available to try out before you commit to buying one elsewhere (we do not sell carriers). If you already have a carrier and need help using it, help is available. We do not focus on or promote one brand or type of baby carrier. This group does not focus on one particular parenting style. Anyone who wishes to learn about babywearing is welcome.
What if I already know about babywearing?
If you’re having a new baby, you may want to brush up on techniques for wearing a newborn. Maybe you have been curious about expanding your babywearing knowledge by trying out new carriers or a new position? Remember when you started babywearing and you had questions or needed some pointers? You can help other parents that are new to babywearing. Help spread the love!
Do you donate or give away baby carriers?
No. Our group is focused on babywearing education and advocacy. We do not have the resources to donate or give away carriers
